Realtors Say Garage Door Appearance Matters When Selling Home

    CINCINNATI, OH - 5/11/2006

The garage door may not be the first item you think of dressing up when putting your house up for sale, but realtors say it’s worth giving it some attention. Replacing your garage door prior to listing your home could increase the asking price anywhere from one to four percent, according to realtors surveyed in a nationwide study fielded by Stratamark Research and garage door manufacturer Clopay Building Products. On a $350,000 home, that’s an increase of anywhere between $3,500 and $14,000, just because of the garage door. The research firm recently polled three hundred realtors to determine if garage door appearance makes a difference in the listing price they would assign to a house and if so, how much of an increase a homeowner can expect. Nearly all of the agents interviewed agreed that a new garage door enhances curb appeal and 75 percent believes it adds value to a home. Read More

Preparing to Sell? Surveys Show It Pays to Perk up Where You Park

Cincinnati - 2/13/2008

Remodeling projects that help enhance a home’s value are a priority for homeowners, particularly in today’s highly competitive housing market.  When considering an improvement, especially with an eye towards resale, recent surveys indicate the garage is a good place to start to increase a home’s curb appeal and value. That’s because many buyers judge a house by its exterior.
“A remodeled kitchen and bath can help sell a home, but curb appeal is what gets buyers through the door. If they don’t like what they see from the street, chances are, they won’t waste time going inside,” says Betty Jane Garrett, a licensed realtor in Oklahoma City. Read More

Yes, Even a Garage Door can be "Green" - Editorial Backgrounder

Homeowners looking for ways to make their house “green” can start by taking stock in an unlikely home commodity - the garage door. As the largest moving part on a home, the garage door plays an important role in maintaining its structural integrity and energy efficiency – two important criteria in green building design.
Long-Lasting Products, Fewer Replacements
Sustainability is a key element of green building, and, with a life cycle of between 15 - 20 years, an investment in a durable garage door that can withstand the rigors of daily use is money well spent for a home and the environment.
“Long-lasting products significantly reduce the impact of manufacturing and building on the environment, as well as fuel costs associated with distribution, and general waste,” says Pat Lohse, vice president of marketing for garage door manufacturer Clopay Building Products. Read More

Clopay® Ultra-Grain™ Garage Door Named one of the 100 Best New Products of 2009

Cincinnati, OH - 9/18/2009

Clopay’s Ultra-Grain steel garage door has been named one of the 100 Best New Products of 2009 by Professional Builder magazine.
Clopay introduced the woodgrain paint finish option to both its Gallery® and Avante™ Collections earlier this year, offering homeowners an affordable, low-maintenance, natural looking stain alternative to an actual wood door.
Clopay has invested in a system that will print the medium oak colored grain in two directions, both horizontally and vertically, following the stiles and rails, for a more authentic wood appearance.
No special maintenance is required to preserve the finish beyond standard garage door recommendations to wash and rinse the surface periodically.
Top product picks are featured in the September issue of Professional Builder magazine.
This is the second year in a row that a Clopay door has been included on the list.
The “sandwich” constructed Gallery Collection doors feature a layer of environmentally safe, CFC-free, polyurethane insulation foam injected between two layers of heavy gauge steel with a thermal break. The R-value is 17.2. Insulated windows are also an option.  Gallery Collection three-layer steel doors also qualify for the new federal Energy Tax Credit.
“Woodgrain prints are fast becoming a popular choice for homeowners who like the look of real wood but not the upkeep,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of residential marketing.

CHICAGO — Chicago police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old woman who was apparently crushed by her garage door on the city's South Side.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the remains as Yneekah Garcia of Chicago. Police were called to the scene at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and found the door on Garcia's neck. Garcia was pronounced dead at 8 a.m.
Chicago police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak says authorities are conducting a death investigation.
Family members say the garage door on Garcia's home had been broken and believe Garcia had parked her vehicle inside the garage before trying to lower it manually.
Garcia is survived by four children.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

Boy killed by garage door

May 10, 2009 9:57 AM | 23 Comments | UPDATED STORY
A 6-year-old boy was killed on the Far South Side Saturday night when an overhead garage door fell on his back, police said.
The incident occurred at 8:46 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Saginaw Avenue in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said.
The boy -- identified as Dijion Sanders -- went outside to play with his brother, News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien said this morning. Minutes later, the brother came back inside and told their mother the boy was under the garage door; she called 911.
Dijion was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where he later died, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Police have notified the Department of Children and Family Services and the police special victims unit. Detectives are still investigating the incident, though preliminary reports indicate it was an accident, O'Brien said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.

1/26/2009, Canyon Ridge Press Release

Faux Wood Composite Door Offers a Perfect Replica with All Its Imperfections While the vast majority of today’s residential garage doors contain some element that mimics the look of real wood, like surface texture embossing for a rough-sawn appearance, Clopay’s new Canyon Ridge™ Collection goes a step further, marrying the beauty of a natural wood appearance with the latest innovations in polymer composite engineering. The result is a new high definition grain faux wood cladding that duplicates with uncanny realism every aspect of a species’ charm and character. The 1/2" thick material is molded from actual wood to replicate its natural texture and intricate grain patterns as well as its imperfections, like deep, irregular pockmarks, knots, cracks, and holes up to 1/4" deep. It is attached to an insulated three-layer steel base door for added energy efficiency and strength. Once installed, the material is virtually indistinguishable from real wood. But it doesn’t have the drawbacks inherent in natural material. It’s lightweight, very durable and very easy to maintain. Thus it will not need to be refurbished or replaced as frequently allowing for energy and resource conservation. The cladding itself is UV resistant so it can withstand high humidity, desert heat and freezing weather, making it an ideal solution for any climate. It is also insulated to help reduce energy consumption. Canyon Ridge Collection doors are offered in three overlay species: Pecky Cypress, Clear Cypress and Mahogany. The surface can be stained or painted. Optional decorative hardware is available to enhance the character of the doors
